Mineral structures and the composition of the deep Earth

Upper mantle:

• from the Moho to 400 km:
  • 54% of olivine, alpha phase
  • 28% of pyroxenes: orthopyroxene (Mg,Fe)SiO₃ et clinopyroxene (Ca,Mg,Fe)₂Si₂O₆
  • 18% of garnets: (Mg,Fe,Ca)₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂
• from 400 km to 670 km:
  • 52% of wadsleyite (beta phase), and then ringwoodite (gamma phase)
  • 48% of garnets

Lower mantle:

• 5% of perovskite CaSiO₃
• 75% of perovskite (Mg,Fe,Al)SiO₃
• 20% of magnésiowüstite (Mg,Fe)O

Inner core:

• Hcp iron
